Milton Scott Excellence in Music Award
Celebrating Outstanding Contributions to Music in the Decatur Community
Milt Scott served as the conductor of Opus 24 for 30 years, until May of 2022. In addition to his work with Opus, Milt has held many positions in the Decatur community, including choral director at Eisenhower High School, choir director and worship coordinator at First Lutheran Church, and choral director for the Lutheran School Association (now Unity Christian School). Milt and his wife, Carla, were instrumental in the growth and development of Opus 24 into a premier community choir.
The Milton Scott Excellence in Music Award honors individuals or groups whose dedication to music has enriched the cultural life of Decatur and the surrounding area. This award recognizes those who embody the spirit of service, artistry, and community engagement that Milton Scott championed.

Dedication to fostering high standards of artistry and musicianship
Community Impact
Significant contributions to the Decatur and Macon County community through choral or instrumental performance, education, and/or outreach
Using music as a tool to build connection, inspire audiences, and strengthen community life
Education & Mentorship
Commitment to teaching, mentoring, or inspiring the next generation of singers, musicians, and/or music lovers
Advancing knowledge and appreciation of music literature, both sacred and secular
Service & Legacy
Demonstrated selflessness, leadership, and dedication in promoting music in the area
A lasting impact that reflects the values and spirit of Milton Scott’s legacy
Eligibility: Nominees may be individuals, ensembles, educators, conductors, or community leaders who have made a meaningful contribution to the Decatur and surrounding communities through music. Nominees and nominators may not be actively involved in the Decatur Choral Society or Opus 24.
Selection Process: Nominations must be submitted by March 31 each year. Nominations will be reviewed by the Decatur Choral Society Board of Directors (or designated committee). The award will be presented annually at the Opus 24 Spring Concert.
